Plain definitions of the terms used on this site, from ERP and sign-in realm to Cloudflare Tunnel and marginal-cost pricing.
- Agency
- A business that runs work, such as websites, marketing or bookkeeping, for several client businesses.
- Back office
- The work that keeps a business running behind the scenes: bookkeeping, orders, stock, buying and reporting.
- Business profile (Roadmap)
- A separate set of records for one business inside a workspace, such as one of an agency's clients. Business profiles are planned for SyncedOffice. A profile separates records inside one ERP instance; it is not an isolated environment. (Roadmap)
- Cloudflare Tunnel
- A connection a server opens outward to Cloudflare, so web traffic can reach it without the server publishing a public web port. Web traffic reaches our servers only through an encrypted Cloudflare Tunnel. The servers publish no public web ports.
- CMS (Roadmap)
- A content management system: software for editing a website's pages without a developer. A CMS in each workspace is planned for SyncedOffice. (Roadmap)
- CRM (Roadmap)
- Customer relationship management: software for tracking leads, contacts and deals. SyncedOffice's CRM is planned, not built. (Roadmap)
- Data residency
- The country or region where data is stored, which some contracts and laws care about. SyncedOffice runs on servers in the United States.
- Database cluster
- A database server and the databases it holds, run and looked after as one unit.
- ERP
- Enterprise resource planning: software that keeps a business's back-office records in one system, with rules about who can change what. Every customer organization's workspace runs its own ERP instance, built on Moqui and MarbleERP. No ERP is shared between organizations.
- Kubernetes operator
- A program that runs inside Kubernetes and builds or repairs a system from a written definition. Each workspace is created by a Kubernetes operator from one definition, running the same steps in the same order every time.
- Marginal cost (Roadmap)
- What it costs to serve one more unit: one more message, one more gigabyte. SyncedOffice plans to charge usage at its marginal cost. (Roadmap)
- Multi-tenant
- Software that serves many customers (tenants) from one platform. Multi-tenant systems differ in how much tenants share, from one shared table to fully separate copies of the software.
- Namespace
- In Kubernetes, a named boundary that groups one set of workloads with its own permissions and resource limits. Every customer organization's workspace runs in its own Kubernetes namespace, with its own resource quota.
- OpenID Connect
- An open standard sign-in protocol, built on OAuth 2.0, that lets one identity server vouch for a user to many applications.
- Per-seat pricing (Roadmap)
- Pricing by the number of people who sign in, rather than by records or usage. SyncedOffice plans to price per seat after the pilot. (Roadmap)
- Pilot program
- An early, limited release run with a few customers, who shape the product in return. SyncedOffice is in a pilot. There is no public sign-up yet; our team sets up each customer organization's workspace with you.
- Sign-in realm
- A separate directory of users, roles and sign-in settings on an identity server. Every customer organization's workspace has its own sign-in realm, so its users and roles are kept apart from every other organization's.
- Single sign-on (Beta)
- Signing in once to reach several applications. Workspace users sign in to their ERP with single sign-on (OpenID Connect). (Beta)
- White-label (Roadmap)
- Selling a product under your own name and branding, while another company builds and runs it. White-label branding is planned for SyncedOffice. (Roadmap)
- Tenant
- One customer organization on a multi-tenant platform. Each customer organization (a tenant) gets its own isolated environment: its own Kubernetes namespace, database cluster, sign-in realm and ERP instance.
- Workspace
- In SyncedOffice, one customer organization's own isolated environment: its namespace, database, sign-in realm and ERP instance. Each workspace has its own web address under syncedoffice.com, where its users sign in.
